The term comes from the Greek word apologia (απολογία), meaning a speaking in defense. Early Christian writers (c 120-220) who defended their faith against critics and recommended their faith to outsiders were called apologists. In modern times, apologists refers to authors, writers, editors of scientific logs or academic journals, and leaders known for defending the points in arguments, conflicts or positions that receive great popular scrutinies and/or are minority views. Andrew, I am certain that some do not know what Christian Apologetics are. I agree that it is very important to defend the teachings of God. The term Christian apologetics doesn t refer to apologizing (or saying sorry ) for being a Christian. The confusion arises because the English word apology now has a rather different meaning from the Greek word from which it was derived: (apologia). The latter meant defense. The Greek term comes from words meaning out of logic/reason, so refers to a reasoned defence that would be given in a court of law. The classic example is Plato s Apology, Socrates defence against the charges of atheism and corrupting the youth.
